Public and Private Sector Experience

I worked for over ten years creating and managing UK public sector websites.  My years as a marketing professional at Penguin Books UK gave me valuable commercial experience.

I use my knowledge and experience (of managing large websites for many years) to provide consultancy services. For large organisations, the business benefits of having a clear content strategy are becoming more widely acknowledged; improving the efficiency of operational issues whilst serving your customers.

I also now design and build websites for small businesses, social enterprises and non-profit organisations.

Bournemouth University Website

Seven years as Digital Communications Manager with responsibility for the Bournemouth University website (15k+ pages) until 2012 provided invaluable experience managing and developing a site with multiple audiences and business objectives. I unified this content-rich website under new branding in 2006 and built a team acting as an ‘in-house agency’ to internal stakeholders. This has given me broad experience of a range of digital marketing techniques, and website fundamentals such as information architecture, content and user experience strategies.

Project Manager: BU Course Search

The example below is a ‘subject area’ page for the study area of Biological Sciences at Undergraduate level. I led the project to create BU’s online course database. This allows users to search or browse of all the courses it offers, across many study levels and disciplines. This particular complex build involved:

  • providing wireframes to our in-house front-end developer who created the look and feel for the Course Search
  • defining all elements of functionality to BU’s in-house back-end Team of .net developers
  • holding end user-testing
  • content build / SEO work
  • training the administrators in the Marketing Team to enter and edit courses
  • integrating the new site seamlessly into the existing website and offline marketing

London Borough of Camden Website

In 2003/4 I spearheaded the move of the successful London Borough of Camden’s website into its new CMS, ensuring information and services were available online to residents, businesses and visitors. I redefined the site’s information architecture, project-managed the new content build / migration and worked with the developers to define user-friendly pages across this large content and services-rich website.

Penguin Books: Agency Marketing Manager

Prior to moving into ‘new media’ in 2000, I had the experience of working for ten years in various roles in one the biggest names in book publishing, Penguin Books, which informed my understanding of the processes of large organisations for marketing and communications.

My roles covered budgetary management, PR, sales support, copywriting and designing marketing literature and in-store displays, account handling.

My interest in all things digital was piqued in 1996 working as an account handler for Microsoft Press and liaising direct with their Seattle HQ.  Recognising the way of the future I got online in 1997 and was hand-coding my own websites the next year.
